There are no large settlements in the valley nor any for many miles to the north so major roads are few. The main road running north and south is the B6451between Otley and Pateley Bridge and the only trunk road is the A59 connecting Harrogate in the east with Skipton to the west. This road is carrying increasing volumes of traffic between Yorkshire and Lancashire and major roadworks are being planned for a section near Blubberhouses that is subject to landslips above and below the cariageway.

There are some interesting ancient highways and pack horse routes to be seen in the valley.
